Adventure Island / Wonder Boy is being ported to the Atari 2600

The Atari 2600 homebrew scene is very alive. Retro Lord, a user of the Atari Age forum, proves that the 8 bit console has power under the hood by porting of a classic platformer. Expedition Island is indeed a port of Adventure Island or Wonder Boy released in 1986 first on Arcade. The title from SEGA / Escape was then ported the same year to many different consoles and computers but never made it on the faux wood console.

The game is still in its early development as only one level is done for now and the character can not die. Though you’ll be able to do most of the moves, collect items, kill enemies, jump, etc. It seems that the author has every intention of going through with his idea and to make us wait proposes to test the first level. It can be downloaded here to be played on an emulator or a flash cartridge directly on a real 2600.

Now this is pretty interesting. This game cracked me up as a kid especially the way the main character looked. Even his name “Master Higgins” added to the humor of the game itself. Since the NES and Atari 2600 are both different engines of course, the look of Master Higgins in Atari format is definitely more comical than the NES version.
